Translating poetry
It’s not often that I’m asked to work on poetry, but I really enjoy it and when, through various contacts, the Asturian poet Aurelio González Ovies asked me to translate his poem Vengo del Norte into English I was delighted to oblige. It was quite a challenge, but I’m proud of the result. You can read my translation on the poet’s website here.
What a lovely poem and you would never know it is a translation. Very well done, Simon.
Thanks, Alison! That really means a lot coming from a fellow translator.
Hi Simon,
On the page the link points to I could read your translation of the poem called ‘Algún día se posarán los pájaros a cantar'(the title in English says XX). But that’s beside the point. I haven’t read the poem in Spanish, but your English version, like Alison said, does not read like a translation at all. It’s a beautiful, beautiful piece of art. Well done, Simon!
Thanks very much, Alina. For some reason, he didn’t send me the title to translate, but I’ve found it and sent it off to him, so it should be corrected soon.
